July Flooding up-date

Two initial meetings were organised by our County Councillor, George Atkinson, with representatives from WCC and SDC to discuss flooding issues in the village. These were well attended and many questions posed. A topographical survey has been undertaken to determine how best to take water away from the lowest level areas of the village and specific proposals will be submitted to the Parish Council in May.

Follow-up meetings of WCC/SDC/WW Parish Councillors and County/District Council officials have since been held under the banner of "The Wootton Wawen Flood Defence Forum". An interim report from the Hydrology Consultant employed by SDC (Bill Burton) has been received which will be used to help formulate a comprehnsive strategy for future flood alleviation work. Some progress on culvert un-blocking and gulley cleaning has already been made and work adjacent to the Village Hall should take place in August (Details to follow).

[N.B.The Parish Council has identified the following websites which may be of help to anyone considering installing their own flood alleviation measures:  For general advice -  www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subjects/flood  For some specific ideas, look at  www.floodcontrol.co.uk   ; www.floodshield.com  ;    www.sepa.org.uk/flooding/protection   These are just a few that might help (No specific products are endorsed or recommended by the PC or the Local Authorities)]

The Parish Council has obtained copies of booklets from the Environment Agency which provide general advice on flood alleviation and flood protection products. The Clerk also has a list of Charitable organisations which can provide assistance in times of hardship.
